How to Save a Life
There are many stories of people who have save the lives of others. One
story that has proven to be inspiring to others is the story of Chen Si
who has spent much time stopping people from committing suicide at the
Nanjing Bridege on the Yangtze River in China. This bridge has been
referred to as the Chinese bridge of death. Chen has reportedly saved
the lives of 144 people to this day. For the last four years, he has
spent most weekends patrolling the roadway above the Yangtze River,
looking for people who are in so much trouble that they have attempted
to commit suicide. Chen is considered a lifeguard of sorts on the
Nanjing Bridge.
It is unfortunate that around 280,000 people in China attempt suicide
each year. And even though one man can not make much of a difference
when you take into account these large numbers, it is quite admirable
that one man is doing his best to save the lives of others in his
country.
In the 2004 in the hot summer months, Chen made his first save. He
noticed a man on the
bridge who already had one leg over the railing and had thrown his show
in the river. Chen grabbed the main around the waist and rescued him.
The man started to cry. Chen later learned the man was a farmer. His
business partner had basically stolen him blind and the man had no way
to provide for his family. Instead of facing his family, he attempted
suicide. Thankfully Chen was there to save him.
After this incident, Chen has reportedly saved around 144 other people
from death. Evey time he thinks about leaving and not coming back, he
thinks about the people who may commit suicide in the future and he can
not stop trying to help these people. |
